Since Jesus died on the cross and was raised from the dead, there has always been persecution of followers of Jesus. Jesus said that this would be the case many times.
In our nation, Christians have been spared the persecution that God’s people in other parts of the world have had to endure. This is because the founders of our country honored and respected God and created a nation based upon the holy principals of God’s Word.
Evidence of this is seen in the important buildings that house the great governmental institutions in our nations capitol. Holy scripture was etched into the walls and statues of great people of God Almighty were erected to honor God and to bring attention to the foundations of our great nation.
However, this is no longer the reality of what America has become. The godly influences that have brought God’s divine influence and blessing to our nation are being replaced with humanistic values that seek to take God out of the picture completely. Even the words of the Ten Commandments are considered offensive and those who defend such expressions of God’s influence are considered “out of touch” and even a little bit dangerous.
Such is the reality in American today. But, we should not be surprised at what is happening.
1 Peter 4:12-14 NCV My friends, do not be surprised at the terrible trouble which now comes to test you. Do not think that something strange is happening to you. Be happy that you share in Christ’s sufferings so that you will be happy and full of joy when Christ comes again in glory. When people insult you because you follow Christ, you are blessed, because the glorious Spirit, the Spirit of God, is with you.
God tells His people not to be surprised at what happens when a culture turns away from Him, but to keep things in perspective. As the opposition to Christians increases, remember that God is in charge and that He uses every opportunity to reveal Himself to the lost, and to strengthen your faith.
Even in times of severe persecution, God’s love for all mankind can be seen, even to those who are doing the persecuting. God’s Spirit can be seen and felt in God’s people as they boldly live out their faith. In this way, even those who despise God are touched by Him. They feel conviction and guilt because of their sin. Some of those who experience God’s conviction for their sins turn away from their sins and turn to God, and this is God’s purpose in allowing His children to endure such terrible times.
There is a another reason that God allows His children to go through such terrible trials. Experiencing and overcoming trials produces a strength of faith that comes no other way. They learn how to trust in God in the worst of times, and how to rely on Him to come to their rescue and how to boldly profess Him as their Savior, no matter what.
This is why God says that you will experience joy and be blessed when you are insulted, belittled, discriminated against, and persecuted.
Christians are heading into a time of more opposition and more persecution, even here in America. Now is the time to prepare yourselves for the challenges that are coming. I strongly encourage you to study the book of 1 Peter. This is God’s instruction on how to prepare for persecution and how to survive it.
Please continue to pray for believers all around the world who are suffering for Jesus, and pray for our nation as we slide further away from the very thing that has made us great, God.
God bless you all,
