Teaching, Helping and Encouraging Spiritual Growth

What Is Your Purpose?

Life is a full time job. Your life is filled with things that must be done. Life has a way of focusing your attention on what life decides. In between the routine and pressing responsibilities of life there are a few peaceful moments.

This reality is true for Christians, as well. As God’s people, we must be aware that this is a real issue and take steps to keep our focus on what is really important. What is really important in the life of a believer? What is it that God tells His people that they must do? What is your main purpose?

Here is a passage from my book, “Growing Big In God” that addresses this issue.

From before time, God had a plan and purpose for every child of His. There is a role for you to play in God’s overall plan.

Romans 8:29a NIV For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son.

Your role and purpose is to be like Jesus. You are to conform to the likeness of Jesus. You are to think like Jesus, speak like Jesus, and act like Jesus. You are to take on His personality and embrace His purposes.

Hebrews 1:3 NLT The Son reflects God’s own glory, and everything about him represents God exactly.

Jesus is the exact representation of the Father, and you are to do your very best to be the exact representation of Jesus. This is God’s predestined purpose for you. You are to be like Jesus. Through the physical presence of Jesus, people could see the exact representation of God. God’s love, purity, holiness, mercy, tenderness, kindness, patience, humility, sacrifice, and many other attributes of God could be seen in Jesus. People could see God.

As a child of God, you become a stand-in for Jesus. You become the physical representation of Jesus, just as Jesus was the physical representation of the Father. This is your role.

In conforming to the likeness of Jesus, you present to the world around you a picture of who God is and what God is like. As you move away from your old sinful ways and habits to new godly ways and habits, your changed lifestyle sends a message of hope. Your life becomes a very bright light in this very dark world. People can see God in you.

Jesus put it this way:

Matthew 5: 14-16 NIV You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it give light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they see your good deeds and praise God your Father in heaven.

Life has a way of overwhelming you to the point that your focus can be totally on the business of life. As believers, we must guard against this. Remember why God created you in the first place. God wants a people of His very own who are special and unusual and excited about doing His good works. Keep this in mind today.

Live like Jesus and for Jesus! Be a light wherever you go today!
