How to Reach Out To God

When you come to realize that this universe and all that is in it is the work of a loving God and not the result of billions of random, cosmic accidents that came from a complete void in space, then you begin to realize that there must be a reason that this universe and all other things exists. What was God’s reason in creating the universe and all other things, including you?

God created the universe and all that is in it so that He could have a people of His own who genuinely believed in His existence and wanted to know him who loved Him and who wanted to be with Him forever. In order for this to happen, God gave man intellect and reasoning power along with a free will that allows men and women to make up their own minds about God’s existence. And if you come to realize that there is indeed a God who truly loves you, then the question is, “How do you get to Him?”

There was a time when Jesus was near the end of His time on earth when He told His disciples that He was going away to prepare a place for them. When Jesus told them this, Thomas, one of the disciples, asked a very important question.

“Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how do we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:5-6 NIV

This is the very same question people have been asking for generations. “How do we know the way to God?” Jesus answered the question by telling them that “The way to God was through Him.” What does this mean?

This means that all people can get to God through Jesus. How does this work? The big problem is sin. It is the sin in you that separates you from God. God sent Jesus to take away your sin so that there would no longer be a barrier between you and God. Jesus did this by taking your sin upon Himself and paying the price for it while dying on the cross. Jesus died for you to pay the price for your sins and make it possible for you to know God first hand and have a special, close relationship with Him.

This is the message from God to you. Do you believe this? God wants you to believe that He exists and that He loves you. God says that if you believe that God exists and that Jesus is His Son and that He gave His life for you and died for your sins, then you will know Him and be saved from the eternal consequences of sin.

Acts 16:31 NIV “Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.”

John 3:16 NIV “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

God’s Word says that the Holy Spirit will help you come to Him. He will help you see your own sins and convict you of them. Your guilt confirms that you have done things that are an offense to God, and this lets you know that God is real. He wants you to come to grips with your sin and confess them to Jesus. And when you do this, Jesus promises forgive you of your sins and wash them away.

1 John 1:9 NIV “If we confess our sins to Jesus, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.”

When Jesus forgives you of your sins, your past sins are no longer in you. God washes them away and you are clean and pure in God’s eyes. The barrier that existed between you and God is gone. When you admit that you have sinned and confess your sins to God, this leads you into a new relationship with Him. You become a new person, and the very Spirit of God comes to live in you!

God will help you but He wants you to be serious about your new relationship with God. He wants you to make an effort to change. God wants you to make a decision to try not to sin anymore. This is called repenting. When you make this effort consistently, your lifestyle changes from sinning freely to trying to not to sin. And when you do this the terrible baggage of your sin is gone, along with the nagging guilt. You are refreshed!

Acts 3:19 NIV “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing will come from the Lord.

When you believe in Jesus and confess and repent of your sins, then God wants you to accept Him into your life as your Lord and Savior. You become a child of God.

John 1:12 NIV “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”

This is the way to God. If you believe that God is real and He loves you and wants you to come to Him and be a child of His, then pray this simple prayer to God in your own words from your heart.

“Dear Jesus, thank you for loving me.

Thank you for dying in my place for my sins so I could get to God and have eternal life with Him.

I know I am a sinner and I ask you to forgive me of my sins and make me acceptable to you.

I repent of my sins. Help me deal with the temptations I struggle with and help me overcome my sinful habits. I want to change.

I accept you as my Lord and Savior right now. Take me, I am yours. Thank you for loving me and saving me from the eternal consequences of my sin and giving me eternal life with you!”

If you prayed a prayer like this from your heart, God heard it and you are now a new being, a child of God!
