Ever struggle with thoughts that you are grateful no one else can see? Yikes! What a horrifying thought! But, it can’t be helped. Every person is born with a flawed human nature. Along with this come desires and cravings for things that are totally inappropriate and damaging to your relationship with God. These sinful thoughts come whether you like it or not. They just come. They are part of your human condition.
The question is, “How do you respond to these awful secret thoughts?” Do you entertain them and let them grow into sinful acts that separate you from God, or do you fight them off and protect your relationship with God?
Your thoughts are the beginning of acts. Your thoughts really determine the way you think, believe, how you live and who you really are. This is why God tells you that “you are what you think” (Proverbs 23:7).
What does God tell you to do to deal with bad thoughts?
1 Peter 1:13-15 NKJV Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you to be holy in all your conduct.
This instruction is absolutely necessary in defeating inappropriate thoughts that appeal to the cravings of your human nature. God says to “gird up the loins of your mind and be sober”.
What does this mean? It means to get serious about this problem. It means to brace yourself for the battle that is coming. It means to be prepared. It means to be aware of the danger within you and to be continually be alert and ready for battle.
When that sinful and even wicked thought first enters your mind, respond quickly. Do not give it a “second thought”. Immediately go to God for help. Know that the power of God’s grace is enough to beat down whatever pops into your mind. Grace is God’s mighty presence, influence and power you needed to subdue your evil craving.
God says to completely depend on grace to combat your evil thoughts. When you do this, you are “fully resting upon the grace of God”.
Grace is God’s provision to defeat sinful thoughts before they become sinful acts. This is God’s plan to keep you pure and holy. The acts of God’s grace that make up your life will reflect the desires of God rather than the desires of your sinful human nature. You will look like Jesus instead of the person your were before you met Jesus.
Seeking God’s help the moment a sinful thought enters your mind keeps you pure and leads to a holy life. Remember, God has called you “to be holy in all your conduct”.
So, rely on God’s grace and by faith act it out in your life. This is grace and faith acting together to achieve God’s purposes, once again!
I know you will be confronted with an evil thought very soon. Now act on God’s instruction and clobber the devil when he tries to control your behavior with evil thoughts!
Have a great day!
