Aren’t you glad that your thoughts cannot be seen by anyone else? How embarrassing that would be! There is a whole secret world that thrives in the thought-life. It is the place where the most secret sinful and shameful desires are stored.
These thoughts are the source of conflict between God’s righteous will and desires and your own human sinful desires and will. This is the place where the act of sin begins. God says that all sin begins in your secret thought-life (James 1:13-15). For the believer, keeping these sinful thoughts under control is essential to living the kind of life that reveals the righteousness of Christ in your life.
This is why God tells His people to take captive every thought so that they can live upright and honorable lives that bring Him glory. It all begins by taking control of your thoughts.

Most believers are aware of this, but the question is “How do you take control of your thoughts?”
Often you are simply going along when a sinful thought pops into your mind. Sometimes there is no particular reason for such thoughts, they just come into your mind. Has this ever happened to you?
Then there are times when sinful thoughts are triggered by certain weaknesses that you have. It could be a moment of jealousy that leads to unhealthy feelings about someone else, or for men seeing an attractive woman that causes all kinds of inappropriate thoughts. The kinds of things that cause bad thoughts are limitless.
Nobody is exempt from this problem. So, how do you deal with wrong thoughts that are spontaneous or triggered by something you see or hear?
Try this. When you have a sinful thought that comes into your mind that is quickly taking control, put a stop to it. Having a sinful thought is not a sin, but entertaining it is. If you let your sinful thought loose, it will lead you very quickly to sin. Jesus said that if you sin in your mind it is the same as committing the sin (Matthew 5:28).
So, the moment a sinful thought enters your mind immediately say, “NO!” Resist the sinful thought. God tells you that if you resist the devil he will flee from you (James 4:7). Take control of the thought by putting a stop to it. With determination, resist the evil thought. God says that when you resist the devil, he will flee from you. So, deal with your unwelcome thought quickly and decisively.
Then replace that unhealthy thought with a good thought. God tells you that you are to “think on good, wholesome and honorable things.” When an unwelcome thought comes give thanks to God for all He has done for me and praise Him. This will drive the devil out!
Philippians 4:8-9 NIV Finally, brothers (and sisters) whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things…. and the peace of God will be with you.
When powerful thoughts come into your mind that are inappropriate and harmful to your relationship with God, act immediately. Resist them, and then replace them with good, true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable thoughts. This will bring you inner peace, and glory to God.
