How to Deal With Obnoxious People

Have you ever known anybody who just seemed to push all your buttons? You know, someone who knew just what to say or what to do to get under your skin. These are the people who are part of your life who have raised being obnoxious to a high art form. Needling others is their specialty and great sport for them. It may be fun for them, but for you, it is annoying, belittling, aggravating, and angering.

So, what can you do to deal with this kind of assault that stirs up such negative emotions and causes you to want to react with an equally negatively response?

God gives you several ways to deal with the darts of the obnoxious.

Maintain Emotional Control

When you are the target of this kind of abuse, don’t bite. Don’t react. Don’t give in to your human instinct to give back as good as you get. You will end up looking foolish, which is the intended purpose of the needling in the first place. Your response is the prize for these skilled agitators.

Remain calm. The emotional bomb thrower will be the one who looks foolish. Don’t play the game.

Proverbs 14:17 NIV A quick-tempered man does foolish things.

Ecclesiastes 7:9  NIV Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.

Proverbs 16:32 NIV Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city.

Respond With a Soft Word

Answer the emotional bully with a soft response. This is not what they are expecting and steals their pleasure. In this you can take pleasure!

Proverbs 15:1 NIV A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger.

Keep Your Desire to “Get Even” Under Control

Don’t smile on the outside but be enraged on the inside. Do not simmer over the needling and baiting and want to get even. Don’t seek revenge. Let God give you the revenge you deserve. Revenge is a first cousin of justice, and God is just. So, remain calm. God will take care of business at the right time.

Romans 12:19 NIV Do not take revenge, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written; “It is mine to avenge; I will repay”, says the Lord.

God knows that during your time on this earth you will encounter these unpleasant people. Do not let them drag you down.

Follow God’s plan of action to deal with obnoxious people. Keep your emotions under control; Respond with soft words; Let God take revenge, not you.

This is how you become victorious over the obnoxious in your life!

God bless!
