I recently received an email from a dear friend that I led to the Lord several years ago. She has been reading the Bible, but feels like she is just “checking that off her list” of things to do. She doesn’t feel like she is retaining much of it and as a result, doesn’t feel like she is really benefitting much from her reading. She asked me for some advice.
I told her that reading God’s Word will help you grow in your faith and become more equipped to deal with the realities of life. I made the case that it is always good to read God’s Word, and that at the right time, God will remind you of what you have tucked away in a corner of your heart, even if you “think” you are not retaining it.
This is true, but, I think there is more that can be added to better answer her question.
God certainly wants all of His children to read and study His Word, even if they have to make themselves do it. This is the description of a dedicated and faithful disciple. You follow Jesus and yield to His will, no matter what!
In 2 Timothy 2:15, God tells us to, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
In reading the Word, even when you are distracted by the “stuff” of life, you are doing your best, as God requires.
Faithfully reading and studying God’s Word brings His approval. God approves of your faithful determination to read His Word, even if you don’t feel like it. You will never have to be ashamed before the Lord because you neglected your responsibility to read and study God’s Word. Nor will you ever be ashamed before the Lord because you are not just “reading” the Word, but you are living it out. Your faithful reading, studying and practicing God’s Word makes you a “workman” of the Word.
A workman of the Word is someone who reads the Word, carefully studies the Word, knows the Word, and practices the Word. The word “workman” means, “laborer, toiler and teacher.” Becoming a workman of the Word equips you to be an effective representative of your Lord and Savior. Your good lifestyle habits have an impact on the lost world around you, and they “learn” who God is and what He is like by how you live. And all because you took the time to read, study and practice the Word of God!
So, there is no wrong reason to read God’s Word. Keep reading it, but don’t stop there. Study it. Get to really know it. And live what you know out in your life. This is what God is looking for in His disciples! So, read the Word no matter what!
You will find that God will give you an insatiable desire for the Word, and you will actually crave it! So, keep on reading! See for yourself how God will bless you!
Have a great day!
